BRI (Basic Rate Interface) is one of the types of ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) services. It provides two 64 kbit/s B channels and one 16 kbit/s D channel, often referred to as 2B+D. These channels allow simultaneous transmission of voice, video and data over the same line.
BRI and PRI
Although both BRI and PRI (Primary Rate Interface) are ISDN services, they have differences.
Bandwidth. BRI provides 2B+D channels, making it suitable for small business or home use. In contrast, PRI provides 23B+D channels in North America (and 30B+D in Europe), targeting large enterprises.
Infrastructure. BRI can be deployed over existing telephone lines, while PRI often requires specialized infrastructure.
Cost. Given the bandwidth, BRI is generally more affordable than PRI, making it the preferred choice for small systems.
