The monitoring object is an element of the IT infrastructure with indivisible accessibility: a server, an operating system, a network element, a DBMS, etc., which must be provided with regular and stable performance. The monitoring object can be any: local, virtual, network, etc.
IT infrastructure monitoring
The monitoring process itself is usually carried out automatically using application software. For a small IT infrastructure – for example, a pair of servers — monitoring is optional, since it can be monitored by a single administrator.
Automatic monitoring is used by medium and large companies. Such systems are specialized software with extensive capabilities. Examples: Icinga, Zabbix, Nagios, online and cloud services. The functionality allows you to:
— monitor host resources: CPU, disk, RAM usage
— monitor the operation of network services, including POP3, SMTP, HTTP
— collect detailed event statistics and create reports
— set up and send out alerts
— predict and prevent failures
— plan infrastructure development
— keep records of the quality of service (QoS)
